What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and Olympic sport. Like other martial arts, Taekwondo is a system of self-defence that utilises a combination of blocking and striking techniques to attack and defend. The most well-known aspect of Taekwondo is often the high, powerful spinning kicks that differentiate it from other martial arts that use such techniques sparingly, if at all.

The main governing body for Taekwondo is World Taekwondo (WT), based in Seoul, South Korea. This style of Taekwondo is used in the Olympics and at high-level competitions throughout the world. As well as World Taekwondo there are numerous governing bodies and styles of Taekwondo throughout the world that teach Taekwondo with some variation, however, the core principles of Taekwondo remain unchanged.
